Nestled in the heart of Sri Lanka lies Kandy, a vibrant city that is best known for its dignified reputation as the spiritual and cultural capital of the island.
The foremost reason for this is Kandy’s number one attraction; the Temple of the Tooth, an astonishing religious centre that is considered one of Sri Lanka’s holiest places.
Also, Kandy is now world-famous as one of the gateways to the most spectacular train journey in the world, running between the ancient kingdom of Kandy and the lush mountain town of Ella.
But to me, Kandy is more than just a stepping stone to Sri Lanka’s famous Ella to Kandy train ride.
The former City of Kings is in fact a great town to get a feel for everyday Sri Lankan life.
Whether you’re enjoying a calm afternoon at the iconic Kandy Lake, experience the hustle and bustle of the intoxicating Kandy Market, admiring the picture-perfect views from the Big Buddha statue, or simply roam endlessly through the lively streets, Kandy clearly knows how to emphasize its charms.
To help you explore the very best of Kandy, I’ve put together this guide, including my favourite things to see and do – plus advice on where to stay, when to visit and how to get there.

#1 Visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic
At the heartbeat of the vibrant city is one of the most sacred Buddhist places of pilgrimage in the world. This is mainly because the legend says a tooth of Buddha is kept here.
The most important Buddhist relic of Sri Lanka remains safe in a gold casket under the roof of the Temple of the Sacred Tooth. Every day, thousands of Buddhists come by to honour and celebrate the Sacred Tooth Relic.
The Sri Dalada Maligawa was built by the Kandyan kings between 1687 and 1707 to house the sacred relic. The temple since then became the number one attraction in Kandy.
The best time to visit the Temple of the Tooth is during Buddha Puja. During this ceremony, the casket, containing the Sacred Tooth Relic, is revealed to its worshippers.
Those spiritual practices are held three times a day and are really intriguing to witness. As always, respect religious customs.

How to get to the Temple of the Tooth Relic | This one is quite straightforward. From the city centre walk in the direction of Kandy Lake. Once you arrived at the lake you’ll see the complex on your left hand.

2 | CLIMB YOUR WAY TO THE BAHIRAWAKANDA VIHARA BUDDHA STATUE
Brilliantly positioned, on top of the Bahirawa Kanda hill and to be seen from various points in town is the majestic Bahirawakanda Vihara Buddha Statue.
A visit to the big Buddha in Kandy brings a sense of peace and harmony, not to mention an impressive panorama view.
With 27 meters tall it is one of the largest Buddha statues in Sri Lanka. Even more notable is the charming atmosphere created by the Buddha overlooking Kandy with a serene facial expression.
Don’t forget to remove your hat and shoes when entering the temple complex.

How to get to the Bahirawakanda Vihara Buddha Statue | The Big Buddha in Kandy is at 1.2km away from the city centre. From the Bahirawa Kanda Road, it is around 750 meters walking with an incline of 26 meters.

3 | TAKE A WALK AROUND KANDY LAKE
Kandy Lake is an iconic place where you’ll find calm and serenity at the heart of the vibrant city.
Taking a walk around the Kiri Muhuda lake is both peaceful and charming. The beautiful area around the lake is home to some of the best activities in Kandy, think of the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic and the Udawattakele Forest.
During sunset, the lake turns into a huge reflecting mirror which is magnificent to observe. Locals appreciate hanging out around the Kandy Lake while the sun slowly drops below the horizon. You’ll understand why once you experienced a vibrant and peaceful atmosphere for yourself.

How to get to Kandy Lake | For Kandy Lake you don’t need any directions. You simply can’t go around it when in Kandy. Ooh, you actually can, takes about an hour to walk through.
4 | CLEAR YOUR MIND AT THE UDAWATTEKELE SANCTUARY
In the midst of the lively, sometimes chaotic city center of Kandy is a hill-ridge that is home to the Udawattakele Forest Reserve.
The Udawattekele Sanctuary is perfect for a quiet and peaceful walk away from the bustling city. The urban forest that was once only open for royal blood is home to over 400 species of plants, 70 species of birds and several mammals.
A walk through the sanctuary brings you along a few interesting sights.
By following the path that walks through the sanctuary you’ll come along the highest peak of Kodimale, the Senkanda Cave, the water pond and some interesting Buddhist temples. The duration of a round trip is approximately 5km.

How to get to the Udawattakele Forest Reserve | By taking a 15-minute walk, starting at the Temple of the Tooth. Follow the DS Senanayake Veediya road until you reach the post office near the Kandy Municipality. Turn right at the post office and follow the road uphill.

5 | EXPERIENCE PURE BLISS DURING THE KANDY TO ELLA TRAIN RIDE
If both Ella and Kandy are on your Sri Lanka itinerary, this beautiful train journey is a must. The 7-hour train ride is incredibly charming and guarantees memories that last a lifetime.
The most authentic experience is between the locals in the 3rd class, which is also the cheapest option. The vibe that reigns inside the dusty train cabins is extraordinary at it’s finest. Never ever had I experienced such an authentic journey in my life.
While the train slowly navigates along the winding tracks you’ll pass dense forest hills, vibrant local villages and hundreds of flourishing tea fields. Literally everything the light touches is pure beauty and bliss. Try to reach for an open door or a window seat once you’ll reach the most picturesque part of the journey: Nanu Oya to Ella.

6 | WANDER AROUND THE ROYAL BOTANIC GARDENS OF PERADENIYA
Wandering through pure delicate nature on a warm day, sheltered and cooled down by the shade of tree leaves. That’s a walk through the Royal Botanic Gardens of Peradeniya in a nutshell.
The Royal Botanic Gardens, located in Peradeniya, just outside of Kandy is a lively urban city park. The gardens contain over 4.000 species of plants, including spices, medicinal plants, orchids and palm trees.
An early morning stroll is perfect to escape the heat and chaos that prevails in Kandy town. While walking through the gardens, pay some extra attention to the superb looking Royal Palm Avenue, the appealing Orchid Garden and the impressive Cannonball Tree that was planted by King George and Queen Mary of the United Kingdom.

How to get to the Royal Botanical Gardens of Peradeniya | From the city centre of Kandy it takes only 10-minutes by tuk-tuk to reach the gardens of Peradeniya. A one-way trip will cost around 400 LKR ($2).

7 | EXPLORE THE KANDY MUNICIPAL CENTRAL MARKET
You’ll have to admit it, the atmosphere found at a local market always tend to be attractive. The two-floor Kandy Municipal Central Market is no different.
The Market in Kandy is an excellent place to experience the hustle and bustle of daily local life in Sri Lanka.
The first floor is where your senses are put to the test. Vendors from every kind try to bargain a deal with you. Think of fresh fruits, spices, fish, dried fish, meat and vegetables.
Upstairs you’ll find a great variety of incense, all kinds of textiles, artistic crafts, and even medicines. At the Kandy market, they sell almost everything, name it and they’ll have it for you.
Making your way along a countless amount of market stalls can be a bit overwhelming and chaotic at first. Once you’re used to the circumstances it is genuine the best way to discover Kandyan’s daily life.

How to get to the Kandy Market | The market in Kandy is opposite to the Central Bus Station and Kandy Clock Tower.
8 | ST. PAUL CHURCH
The historic district of Kandy, where you’ll find the world-famous Temple of the Tooth is also home to the St. Paul Church.
The Neo Gothic-style church, English Victorian on the inside, was consecrated on 25 January 1853 after a long building process.
At first, the church named the Garrison Church. The mission of the church was to serve British troops during the British Ceylon period. Nowadays, the Anglican church is open to worshippers every Sunday at 07:45 am.
Exploring the church and historic district of Kandy can easily be combined with a visit to the Udawattekele Sanctuary and Temple of the Tooth.

How to get to the St. Paul Church | The church is located behind the Temple of the Sacred Tooth in the historic district. A walk from the temple to the church is around 5 minutes.
Where to eat in Kandy
Licensed to Grill | Even though they have a license to grill, their food is illegally delicious.
Roots Fresh Juice | The perfect place to treat yourself on a refreshing juice during the sizzling days in Kandy.
The Bakehouse Kandy | If you’re into pastries don’t hesitate to drop by The Bakehouse. It’s an excellent venue to satisfy your inner sweet tooth. Try their local favourite ‘Malu Paan’.

The weather | Best time to visit Kandy
The best time to visit Kandy in Sri Lanka is between December and April. The days are mostly dry which is excellent to wander around the city.
Even though the weather in Sri Lanka is good year-round, keep in mind that Sri Lanka experiences two monsoons. The first one is from May to September and the second one is from October to November.
During my visit to Kandy in the midst of September, the monsoon didn’t give me any trouble. In fact, the prices were lower and there were fewer travellers around.
Try to avoid the monsoons if you’re planning to hike the Knuckles Mountain Range, during the wet season the forest is full of leeches.
How to get to Kandy
From Colombo to Kandy
Train | The 3-hour train ride from Colombo to Kandy is part of the world-famous Colombo to Badulla route. The direct journey starts at the Colombo Fort station and is quite straightforward. For those who are unfamiliar with public transport in Sri Lanka, this journey is a good introduction.

Bus | Jump on a direct bus that leaves at the Colombo Bastian Mawatha Bus Terminal. The journey to Kandy takes as long as the train but without the epic views. Taking the train should be your number one pick.

From Ella to Kandy
Train | One of the most beautiful train rides in the world is the one from Ella to Kandy. Imagine a scenic, 7-hour journey that goes by smoother than expected, that is exactly what the journey from Ella to Kandy is. This pleasant ride brings you along green mountains and lush tea fields.
Travel time | The journey takes around 6 – 7 hours to complete
Cost | 2nd class: 250 LKR ($1.5) per person | 3rd class: 180 LKR ($1) per person
Bus | Don’t even think of taking a bus from Ella to Kandy, the train journey is way too scenic.
From Sigiriya to Kandy
Bus | Sigiriya – Dambulla – Kandy – Start the journey with a 20-minute tuk-tuk drive to Dambulla. At the Dambulla bus stand jump on a direct bus that heads for Kandy.
Cost | Tuk-tuk to Dambulla – 1.000 LKR ($5.5) | Bus from Dambulla to Kandy – 200 LKR ($1) per person.
Travel time | The journey takes 2.5 – 3 hours

8 IMPRESSIVE THINGS TO DO IN ELLA, SRI LANKA
1 | WALK ALONG THE RAILS OF THE NINE ARCH BRIDGE
Who would’ve thought, a bridge built in 1921, just outside of Ella, would one day single-handedly be responsible to attract travellers to Sri Lankan hill country.
The Nine Arch Bridge is hidden in a dense jungle that is formed by forest and tea fields. Early morning visits often bring mist which creates a moody but mystical vibe.
Try to plan your visit around 8 am, this gives you space to walk around and look at the bridge from various viewpoints without a huge crowd being around.
With trains passing the Nine Arch Bridge at the following times: 9:30, 11:30, 15:30, 16:30, and 17:30, an early morning visit is perfectly right to watch a train gently follow the track along the bridge. Keep in mind that train times in Sri Lanka are unpredictable and trains often pass the bridge later than planned.
Where | Nine Arch Bridge, Ella
How to get to the Nine Arch Bridge | The Nine Arch Bridge is located just outside of Ella in a town named Demodara. A 15-minute hike through the jungle will take you along several satisfying viewpoints before reaching the famous bridge. In my honest opinion, this is the most adventurous, authentic and pleasing way to experience your visit.
Tuk-tuk | If a small hike through nature isn’t for you, a 200 – 300 LKR ($1 – $1.5) tuk-tuk ride can bring you straight to the beginning of the Nine Arch Bridge.
2 | ADMIRE THE VIEWS OF ELLA GAP FROM LITTLE ADAM’S PEAK
The hill country of Sri Lanka and in particular Ella is well known for hiking. Little Adam’s Peak guarantees phenomenal views over Ella Gap and the endless mountain ranges in the distance, making it one of the absolute best things to do in Ella.
During the hike up Little Adam’s Peak, you’ll get introduced to the first viewpoints while crossing lush tea fields. The reward you’ll get for reaching the end of the trail is a panorama view over both Ella Rock and the breathtaking Ella Gap.
The best time to hike Little Adam’s Peak is during sunrise and sunset. Being at a height of 1141m above sea level while the sunrise stretches over the mountains is just miraculous.

How to get to Little Adam’s Peak | From Ella, it’s a 1.5km walk to reach the start of the Mini Adam’s Peak trail.
Tuk-tuk | You can take a tuk-tuk from the main street to the start of the trail for 200 LKR ($1).
3 | JUMP ABOARD THE FAMOUS TRAIN RIDE FROM ELLA TO KANDY
The train from Ella to Kandy is considered one of the most beautiful train journeys in the world. And surprisingly but true, it feels like the 7-hour journey is going by way too quickly.
Cruising along the tracks you’ll experience magnificent views over dense tea fields and green hills, not to mention the amazing authentic and vibrant atmosphere inside of the cabin.
3rd class in particular, is in my opinion the most authentic option. Kids playing a game, which means screaming down every tunnel, vendors walking around selling typical Sri Lankan snacks, while local people are always curious to make a chat.
A window seat on the right (left side if going from Kandy to Ella), a spot at an open door, is where you’ll want to be for the best views. Try grabbing a seat before reaching the most impressive part of the journey: Nanu Oya to Ella.
For me getting a ticket on the day of departing wasn’t that hard. During peak season it’s different. It’s wise to get your ticket 1-2 days in advance or by booking online here.

4 | HIKE TO THE SUMMIT OF ELLA ROCK
The marvellous views when reaching the summit of Ella Rock are worth every bit of the somehow appealing but challenging trail.
The journey begins by following the train tracks in the direction of Kandy starting at the Ella Railway Station. Along the way, you’ll notice tea plantations, waterfalls and countless viewpoints.
The climb up to the summit of Ella Rock lasts around 2.5 hours and can be quite misleading. To get a more accurate insight about the directions, use the app maps.me. Don’t forget to fuel your activities with some snacks and water.

Hike to Ella Rock | To get a more detailed description of the trail use this step-by-step guide.
Train or Tuk-tuk | If you’re short in time, or not feeling like doing the full hike, this is a good alternative. By taking a train or tuk-tuk from Ella to the Kital Ella Railway Station you cut down the hike by 45 minutes.
5 | MARVEL AROUND AT RAVANA FALLS
Easily one of my favourite things to do in Ella is visiting the impressive multi-tiered Ravana Falls, which is considered Sri Lanka’s widest waterfall.
Located only a 10-minute drive away from Ella town, the 25-metre high waterfall is positioned almost directly at the winding road that runs between Ella Rock and Mini Adam’s Peak.
With Ravana Falls being a three-tier waterfall, it is possible to climb all the way to the top. On the right side is a path that brings you along both second and third tier-falls. The way up is quite rough and surprisingly difficult. It is not recommended to climb up by yourself, so bringing a local guide is not a luxury.
Ravana Falls is a popular attraction among locals and foreigners. You do well to plan your visit early morning or late afternoon.

Tuk-tuk | It’s quite a long and steep walk back to Ella from the Ravana Falls. Taking a tuk-tuk is your best option. Expect a price between 300 – 400 LKR ($1,5 – $2,-) one-way.
Bus | All bus journeys that leave Ella to go south will come along the Ravana Falls. The 10-minute bus ride will cost you only 50 LKR ($0,25).
6 | JOIN A TEA FACTORY TOUR
The circumstances found in the hill country of Sri Lanka are perfectly balanced to cultivate a superior quality of tea. With that being said, you’ll understand that finding a Tea Factory isn’t that hard of a challenge.
Leaving Sri Lanka without visiting a Tea Factory is a no-go. In Ella alone, you’ll find three factories where you can attend the tea-making process while tasting first-class tea. Halpewatte Tea Factory is one of them. Taking a tour here is interesting, educational and an enrichment for the senses.
The other two tea factories in Ella are the Kinnelan Tea Factory and the Ceylon Tea Factory.

7 | HIKE TO THE TOP OF DIYALUMA FALLS
Looking for a full day adventure in Ella? The 2nd highest waterfall of Sri Lanka is located just outside of Ella. The 220-meter high Diyaluma Falls involves multiple natural infinity pools overlooking the Badulla region.
The easiest way to reach the hike to Diyaluma Falls is by taking a tuk-tuk from Ella to Poonagala. From here a 30-minute hike will bring you to the top of the waterfall.
The total time of this day trip from Ella is between 4-6 hours depending on how long you plan to stay at the waterfall. It is wise to bring some snacks and water to fuel the hike.
An alternative option is joining a day tour from Ella. This day tour includes a visit to the Diyaluma Falls and a lunch. For prices and availability check here.

How to get to Diyaluma Falls | For a more detailed description of the trail, check this guide. You can also join a day tour of the Diyaluma Falls.
Cost | While the waterfall itself is free of entrance, getting there with a tuk-tuk will set you back between 3.000 – 5.000 LKR ($16 – $27) for a round trip.
Tip | It is widely known that elephants roam here, so be sure to keep an eye out. Also, avoid visiting after dark.
8 | JOIN A DAY TOUR TO LIPTON SEAT + DAMBATENNE TEA FACTORY
A day trip to Haputale is a great option when in Ella. Haputale is home to the world-famous Lipton Seat and Dambatenne tea factory, built by Sir Thomas Lipton himself.
The views over Lipton Seat are something else and walking among the tea fields feels like a fairytale. Down the hill, you can witness the tea making process during a Dambatenne Tea Factory tour.
To reach Haputale, jump on a train from Ella to Kandy with a stop in Haputale. Please note that a round trip is around 5 hours.

How to get to the Lipton Seat | Take a train from Ella to Kandy and get out at the Haputale Railway Station. At the station, you can get a tuk-tuk straight to Lipton Seat.

WEATHER IN ELLA | BEST TIME TO VISIT ELLA
The temperature in Ella is good year-round averaging 25 degrees. However, there ain’t no such thing as green hills without rainfall. While September and December is the wet season, mornings are still good to go hiking. The best time to visit Ella is during the months from January till May.

If you’re interested in finding the best beaches in Sri Lanka you’ll most likely end up at the east coast. The Trincomalee district is home to untouched coastlines and Nilaveli Beach is a good location to go for whale watching or diving.
Trincomalee itself is a small coastal town that never fails to amuse. You’ll find diversity, culture and religion by visiting the Koneswaram Temple and Fort Frederick. Trinco surprisingly has something for everybody.
These are my absolute favourite things to do in Trincomalee and surrounds.

1 | VISIT THE KONESWARAM TEMPLE
Trincomalee has some interesting Hindu temples to offer. One of them is the Koneswaram Kovil located between the walls of Fort Frederick. The colourful Koneswaram Temple is dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva and is really appealing to see during your stay in Trinco.
From the viewpoint next to the Koneswaram Temple you overlook one of the biggest natural harbours. Don’t let the big statue have all your attention, walking around the temple is really interesting and the details are attractive. Going inside the temple is not a problem if you respect religious customs.
A fun thing I stumbled on while doing research is the fact that I’ve seen several different pictures of the Shiva statue. It looks like they change the statue every year. If anybody knows the reason for this, I’ll find it really interesting so be free to let me know in the comments.

2 | RELAX AT UPPUVELI BEACH
Most travellers that visit Trincomalee in Sri Lanka take Uppuveli as their base to explore the surrounded area. Uppuveli Beach is a small coastal town with plenty of trendy restaurants and a great overall atmosphere. From Uppuveli you can easily plan a whale watching trip or a visit to nearby Nilaveli Beach and Pigeon Island. While the other side of the town is your entrance to Fort Frederick and the Koneswaram Temple.

3 | HANGOUT AT FERNANDO’S BAR
A great atmosphere directly at the beach makes Fernando’s the perfect place to hangout in Uppuveli. During the day you can enjoy fresh juices while relaxing on a sunbed. In the late afternoon, you can savour some sunset drinks while chilling in a hammock. Fernando’s Bar has both good local and western food on the menu. To be honest I think there are better dining options in Trincomalee.

4 | VISIT FORT FREDERICK
Fort Frederick was once built by the Portuguese and is now used as an army base. Inside the Trincomalee Fort prevails a nice atmosphere and there is a lot of greenery to be found. The fort is home to many deers and the world-famous Koneswaram Temple. Just before you reach the temple you’ll find a few market stalls where you can enjoy fresh fruit juices while overlooking Trinco beach. This makes it perfect to visit early in the morning.

5 | WALK ALONG THE UNTOUCHED COASTLINE OF NILAVELI BEACH
Nilaveli is a coastal town in the Trincomalee district on the east coast of Sri Lanka. Nilaveli Beach is known for being a quiet and secluded beach where the sand is white and the water is clear. The long untouched coastline of Nilaveli makes it one of the best beaches in Sri Lanka. Walking along the palms with your toes in the sand is the perfect way to spend some time relaxing in Trincomalee.

How to get to Nilaveli Beach | To get to Nilaveli Beach from Trincomalee you have to take a 20-minute drive up north. The route itself is pretty straight forward, just follow the main road with your rental scooter or take a tuk-tuk.
6 | WANDER AROUND THE SRI PATHIRAKALI AMMAN KOVIL
The Pathirakali Amman Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to the goddess Bhadrakhali. The colourful kovil is one of the most interesting Hindu temples you’ll see while travelling in Sri Lanka. The temple is located opposite of the Trinco bus station and is definitely worth a visit. To fully experience the temple and all its little details take a calm walk around the various buildings.

This trendy café is definitely one of the hotspots in Trincomalee. They serve good coffee, fresh juices and are well known for their delicious smoothie bowls and paninis.
With a cosy atmosphere, this is the café where you want to be for your breakfast or lunch.

8 | WHALE WATCHING IN TRINCOMALEE
Trincomalee is often mentioned as the best destination when it comes to whale watching in Sri Lanka. When joining a Whale-watching tour you have the opportunity to encounter Blue whales, dolphins and in some cases Sperm whales. Expect a price of 5.500-6.500 LKR ($30-$35) per person for 2-3 hours of whale watching in Trincomalee.

The whale watching season in Trincomalee runs from late March till early September. Did you know whale watching in Sri Lanka is good year-round? In Mirissa the season starts December and runs until April. This means Sri Lanka offers around 10 months of whale watching every year.

9 | GO DIVING OR SNORKELLING AT PIGEON ISLAND
Pigeon Island National park is one of the leading destinations when it comes to diving in Sri Lanka. Pigeon Island is a small island that floats in front of the coastline of Nilaveli Beach. The clear water around the island attracts those who are interested in scuba diving and snorkelling. From Nilaveli it takes only 10 minutes to reach the island by boat.
Entrance | The entrance fee to the Pigeon Island National Park is 1.500 LKR ($8). If you’re snorkelling or diving you don’t set any foot on land which means you don’t have to pay the entrance fee. To reach the island you have to arrange a boat trip which cost around 2.000-4.000 LKR ($11-$21). The boat prices vary depending on how long you plan to stay. Keep in mind that there are some extra costs for renting gear or bring your own.

NERO KITCHEN | If you’re hungry for Wood Fired pizza or pasta while in Trincomalee, Nero Kitchen is the place to go. Probably the best pizza you’ll find in Sri Lanka.
CAFE’ ON THE 18TH | A cosy cafe that serves good coffee, fresh juices and is well known for its delicious smoothie bowls and paninis.
TONIC’S | Go here for a great choice of local and western dishes that are priced fairly. Ooh, and they serve the best burgers in Trincomalee.
FERNANDO’S BAR | The perfect place for a late afternoon snack and some sunset drinks. You should definitely try their papadum with mango chutney.

The best area to stay in Trincomalee is without a doubt around Uppuveli Beach. The laidback area has a calm vibe and heaps of trendy restaurants to choose from. With a base at Uppuveli, you can easily reach Nilaveli beach or Fort Frederick, therefore I highly recommend it.

The average temperature in Trincomalee is 30°C year-round. The best time to visit is between January and September. From October to December you can expect more rainfall.
HOW TO GET AROUND TRINCOMALEE
If you’re looking for the freedom to explore Trincomalee and Nilaveli Beach, renting a scooter is your best option. Renting a scooter is around 1.200 to 1.500 LKR ($6.5-$8) a day and a full tank will cost you 600 LKR ($3.25). Driving a scooter in Trincomalee is safe. It is easier to take a tuk tuk for those who aren’t comfortable with driving a scooter.

7 Awesome things to do in Arugam Bay, Sri Lanka’s surfer paradise (2022 update)
Nestled on the east coast of Sri Lanka, Arugam Bay is a vibrant coastal town that is known for many things, including its strikingly beautiful palm-lined beaches, bustling surfing scene and laid back atmosphere.
However, since Arugam Bay is situated a little off the traditional Sri Lanka route, this underrated gem is often skipped by travellers and backpackers alike. Despite that, I’m of the firm belief that travelling to Arugam Bay will be worth extra effort.
Arugam Bay sums up much of what makes Sri Lanka so popular – it’s a tropical beach village with loads of interesting highlights nearby; the fascinating Kudumbigala Monastery, scenic Elephant Rock and the adventurous Kumana National Park to name but a few.
Of course, there are many other unbelievable places to explore within Sri Lanka, yet there’s just something magical about this sleepy fishing village on Sri Lanka’s relatively untouched east coast.
In this guide, I’ll cover all the best things to do in Arugam Bay, as well as first-hand advice on where to stay, when to visit and how to get there.
Where to stay in Arugam Bay
Since Arugam Bay is one of Sri Lanka’s leading surfing destinations, you’ll have no issue finding yourself good accommodation, with plenty of options to suit all sorts of budget and travel styles.
Whether you’re after a cheap stay in a hostel, a luxurious boutique hotel, or something in between, I’m pretty sure you’ll find something that suits your needs.
To help you sort out your stay, I’ve listed my personal recommendations:
Riva del Sole Guest House | Set within the main street of Arugam Bay, Riva del Sole Guest House is an excellent option for those on a budget. This budget-friendly guest house has spacious rooms with comfortable double beds, air-conditioning and a large private bathroom with a rain shower. Doubles at only €35,- a night make this hotel one of the best options in Arugam Bay.
The Spice Trail | Situated both close to the beach and the main street, The Spice Trail is one of the best picks in Arugam Bay, with stylish double rooms, an outdoor swimming pool and an extensive sun terrace. All bookings come with an excellent breakfast too, which makes it a great value for the money.
Jetwing Surf | If your looking for an absolute splurge, look no further, Jetwing Surf is an excellent luxury resort situated directly at Arugam Bay’s main beach. With its spacious cabana-style rooms, large comfortable beds, and a large swimming pool in a prime location, Jetwing Surf is the number one choice for those after luxury and comfort. 1 | LEARN TO SURF IN ARUGAM BAY
Arugam Bay has rapidly become one of the leading surfing hotspots in Sri Lanka, which makes it the ideal destination for beginners and experienced surfing enthusiasts alike.
As soon as you arrive in Arugam Bay, you’ll notice that it’s teeming with trendy shops, offering all sorts of services related to surfing, including gear rental and surf lessons.
Arugam Bay Beach itself, with its crescent-shaped bay, is ideal for beginners that are keen to learn to ride the waves, while surfing points as Main Point and Elephant Rock offer the perfect challenge for those more experienced.
While there are a few other surfing points dotted around the pristine coastline of Arugam Bay – Baby Point, Pottuvil Point, Peanut Farm, and Whiskey Point, I would highly advise sticking to the main beach, especially if you’re a beginner like me.
In terms of cost, surf lessons will range from 2.000 – 3.500 rupees for 1,5 hours, while board rent ranges from 400 – 800 rupees per day.
2 | ADMIRE THE VIEWS AT KUDUMBIGALA MONASTERY
Situated about 30 kilometres south of Arugam Bay is the Kudumbigala Monastery, a sacred monastery that rises high above the encircling jungle of Kumana National Park.
First established in 246 BC, the Kudumbigala Monastery served as a sanctuary for Buddhist monks that desired a path to enlightenment above the hustle and bustle of the city.
Although this ancient rock monastery is still very much in use for spiritual practices, it has lately also appeared on the radar of those travelling to Arugam Bay.
Today, locals and travellers alike visit to climb to the top of the highest mountain, where they will discover an ancient stupa, as well as the most spectacular views of the Kumana district.
If you’re looking to visit the Kudumbigala Monastery by yourself, bear in mind that it’s likely to encounter wild animals along the way – so be cautious.

3 | SPENT A DAY CHILLING AT ARUGAM BAY BEACH
Since you’ll receive loads of new impressions on a daily basis, one of the best things to do in Arugam Bay is actually quite simple; chilling at one of the best beaches in Sri Lanka.
With its tropical palms, fine golden sand and laidback backpackers atmosphere, Arugam Bay’s main beach has become a favourite among travellers and locals alike.
During my stay in Arugam Bay, I’ve spent plenty of time on the beach, often relaxing with a good book and a fresh king coconut in hand – it was everything I wished for after 2 days of safari in the Yala National Park.
While you can easily lay down your towel on the beach, there are a few excellent beachside bars I recommend checking out; Friends Indeed and Upali Beach Resort.
Both bars have sunbeds for hire and offer excellent snack, food and cocktail options, making both joints excellent for an afternoon of relaxing.
If you like to take a swim, the water on the right-hand side of the beach is significantly calmer, which creates an area with little to no surfers in the water – perfect for those after a refreshing dive.

4 | WATCH THE SUNSET FROM ELEPHANT ROCK
It should come as no surprise that visiting Elephant Rock at sunset is on this list with things to do in Arugam Bay.
Sunsets in Arugam Bay can be quite spectacular, and there isn’t a better place to see this unfold than from the summit of Elephant Rock, while the surfers catch their last waves of the day.
Since there’s a laidback vibe going on, it has become a spot where both locals and travellers gather, often while enjoying trendy tunes, snacks and a few sundowners.
However, the journey to Elephant Rock brings a few challenges in terms of wildlife.
Upon arrival at Elephant Rock, you’ll notice a lagoon – it is said that crocodiles are still active here, so I highly advise avoiding it at all times, as well as being a tad more cautious.
Fortunately, I noticed that it was pretty easy to get around the lagoon, yet for safety reasons, I’d recommend going with a group just to be sure.
Also, I’d recommend leaving before dawn, since Elephants also occur in this area.
While the above might upset you, I believe it has to be said if you’re thinking of visiting yourself.
Having said that, visiting Elephant Rock is safe (and awesome), just remember that you’re in a country that is known for its wildlife.

5 | Join a safari tour to the Kumana National Park
Since Arugam Bay is encircled by wildlife-rich jungles, one of the best things to do here is by joining a safari tour to one of the neighbouring National Parks.
Hidden in the dense jungles is the Kumana National Park, a relatively unknown national park situated only a stone’s throw away from Arugam Bay.
Also known as Yala East, the Kumana National park is slowly becoming one of the more popular eco-tourism attractions in Sri Lanka, with significantly fewer visitors than its better-known brother; the Yala National Park.
While the density of animals is slightly lower in comparison to other national parks in Sri Lanka, it is still completely normal to spot Sri Lankan elephants, Fishing cats, Wild boars, Golden jackals and with some luck, even leopards.
But what really sets apart the Kumana National Park, is the park’s extensive birdlife, with thousands of birds migrating here every year between the months of April and July.
Though I visited the Yala National Park before going to Arugam Bay, it’s easy to see why people choose to visit the Kumana National Park.
If you’re keen to visit Kumana, I’d highly recommend sorting out your safari in advance.

6 | Admire the Muhudu Maha Viharaya Stupa in Pottuvil
Established between the sand dunes of Pottuvil Beach, the Muhudu Maha Viharaya is an ancient Buddhist temple that is marked by an impressive white stupa.
Nicknamed the ‘Temple of the Ocean’, the temple was first built over 2000 years ago by King Kavan Tissa of Ruhuna, and is still one of the region’s most impressive sights to behold.
Along with the stupa, you’ll notice several stone statues of Buddha surrounding the area, adding to the temple’s already grand appearance.
So, if you have some spare time in between all the surfing, I’d highly recommend heading to Muhudu Maha Viharaya Stupa for a relaxing morning stroll – trust me, you won’t regret it.

7 | Take a relaxing Lagoon Safari in Pottuvil
Another great way to see the region’s rich and diverse wildlife is by joining a completely different kind of safari, namely a relaxing lagoon safari on Pottuvil’s very own lagoon.
By means of a paddleboat, you will venture through the Pottuvil Lagoon, where you’ll encounter lots of different animals, including wild Sri Lankan elephants, Monitor lizards, buffalos, crocodiles, and a wide variety of bird species.
While it’s certainly not as impressive as a safari in the Yala National Park, it’s actually quite a relaxing experience – plus it’s an excellent way to support the local communities in Pottuvil
One of the most popular tours, and the one I’d personally recommend given the focus on ethical tourism, is the 2-hour lagoon safari tour provided by Unrani Eco Lagoon Safari in Pottuvil.

WHERE TO EAT IN ARUGAM BAY
Hello Burger | When you want a break from eating all those delicious curries, a burger is always a good option. And where better to have a good burger than at Hello burger. On top of the tasteful food, the cosy cafe has a good atmosphere with funky music playing in the background.
Friends Indeed | A good place to enjoy good food and drinks while watching the waves crash at the beach. They serve a balanced menu with both local and western dishes. The vibe is good and the staff is really friendly. For those who work remotely. In my experience, they have the best Wifi in Arugam Bay.
Flo! | This restaurant is located at the beginning of the main street and is the perfect place for traditional Sri Lankan breakfast. I recommend you to try their Roti with coconut sambal and Dal curry with some Lavaria on the side. They also serve high-quality fruit juices and smoothies.
Mantra | Stands out with their local cuisine and a good quality-price ratio. The home-like atmosphere makes Mantra a restaurant where you would like to return. A fun thing is that guests are allowed to write something on the wall.
Other restaurants that deserve some recognition are Cili and Karma Gardens.
WEATHER IN ARUGAM BAY | BEST TIME TO VISIT ARUGAM BAY
Given Sri Lanka lies in the Indian Ocean, the country is known for its tropical climate, with comfortable weather year-round.
However, the pearl-shaped island is also home to two monsoon seasons that manage to have a significant impact on the island’s climate. The monsoon on the east side of Sri Lanka runs from November to January, so you might want to avoid this period.
For that reason, the best time to visit Arugam Bay is from early May till late October, when the temperatures are great and the waves are at their peak.
I’ve visited Arugam Bay in September and had excellent circumstances during my entire stay.
HOW TO GET AROUND ARUGAM BAY
Renting a scooter in Arugam Bay is by far the easiest way to get around. The cost of renting a scooter is around 1.200 to 1.500 LKR ($6.5-$8) and a full tank will cost you 600 LKR ($3.25). If you only plan to stay at the beach and the main street, walking is perfectly fine as distances in Arugam Bay aren’t that big.
HOW TO GET TO ARUGAM BAY
Depending on your itinerary it is most common to travel to Arugam Bay from Trincomalee or Ella. It is also an option to plan your visit after going on a safari in the Yala National Park in Tissamaharama. To reach Arugam Bay you have to spend some extra time as it is a bit off-track for most itineraries. The extra travel time is definitely worth it so don’t let this discourage you from going to one of the best surf spots in Sri Lanka.

Tuk tuk or private taxi | The fastest and most expensive way to travel from Trincomalee to Arugam Bay is with a tuk-tuk or private taxi. In 4-5 hours time, you’ll reach Arugam Bay and it will cost you around 10.000 – 18.000 LKR ($55-$100).

Cost | 10,000-18,000 LKR ($55 – 100)
Bus | Trincomalee – Batticaloa – Pottuvil – Arugam Bay | From Trincomalee jump on a bus that brings you to Batticaloa. This journey takes between 3-4 hours if you’re lucky. At Batticaloa change to the bus with Pottuvil as the destination. This takes another estimated 3 hours. Once you reached Pottuvil it is only 10 minutes which can easily be done with a tuk-tuk or by taking a bus in the direction of Panama.
Travel time | 6 – 7 hours
Total cost | 400 – 700 LKR ($2.5 – 4)
FROM ELLA TO ARUGAM BAY
Tuk tuk | For 5000 LKR ($27-$30) a tuk tuk brings you directly from Ella to Arugam Bay in around 3 hours. The last part of this journey takes a little longer as it is really steep and a tuk tuk will have some troubles with the inclined road. Nonetheless this gives you a perfect opportunity to get your first glimpse of the beauty that the lush green mountains of Ella have to offer.
Travel time | 2.5 – 3 hours
Cost | 5,000-5,500 LKR ($27 – 30)
Bus | Ella – Wellawaya – Monaragala – Pottuvil | In some cases you will find a bus that goes straight to Monaragala from Ella. If not you have to get on the bus that brings you to Wellawaya where you have to change busses to reach Monaragala. From Monaragala you can go directly to Pottuvil by bus. Here you can jump in a tuk tuk or a bus that goes in the direction of Panama.
Travel time | 3 – 3.5 hours
Cost | 300 – 600 LKR ($2 – 3.5)
FROM YALA (TISSAMAHARAMA) TO ARUGAM BAY
Tuk-tuk | From Yala to Arugam Bay takes around 3-3.5 hours and is quite a good ride with some beautiful sceneries along the road. The price for this journey is estimated between 5.000-6.000 LKR ($27-$33). Chances of seeing elephants are highly relevant which is one of the fun parts of the journey.

Cost | 5,000 – 6,000 LKR ($27 – 33)
Bus | Tissamaharama – Thanamalwila – Wellawaya – Monaragala – Pottuvil | From Tissamaharama it is important to reach the Wellawaya bus station. Sometimes the bus goes directly from Tissamaharama but there is a chance you have to switch busses at Thanamalwila. Once you reached Wellawaya after 2-3 hours, jump on the bus that stops in Monaragala. This journey takes roughly 1.5 hours. At this point, it is really tempting to get a tuk-tuk straight to Arugam Bay as switching busses and waiting consumes a lot of time. From Monaragala to Pottuvil is still around 2 hours travelling by bus. Taking a tuk-tuk from Monaragala to Arugam Bay will cost around 2.500-3.000 LKR ($14-$16.5) and is a perfect option to win some time.

If you’re looking for an adventurous day trip not so far from Kampot the Bokor National Park should be your number one pick. The top of Bokor mountain reaches a height of 1048 metre above sea level and that is where you can find historical sites as Le Bokor Palace, Bokor church and Damnak Sla Khmao.
Beside Bokor Hill Station, the park is home to the Popokovil Waterfall and provides great panoramic views over both the Gulf of Thailand and the entire Kampot Province.

Join a Bokor National Park tour
In the city centre of Kampot, you can find a few tourist offices that offer tours of the main attractions in Kampot. One of them is a tour of the Preah Monivong National Park. Most of these tours bring you along Bokor Hill Station, Wat Sampov Pram and the Lok Yeay Mao Monument. A trip from Kampot to Bokor Hill is usually combined with a sunset cruise on the Kampot river. Visiting the national park takes around 5-6 hours and costs $8 per person and you get transported by a minivan.
What to see and do in Bokor National Park
The Preah Monivong National Park in Kampot, Cambodia is rich in history and is one of the things you have to experience while visiting Kampot. This guide provides all the information you need when it comes to visiting the Bokor National Park.
#1 Damnak Sla Khmao
The Black Palace is located at the beginning of the Preah Monivong National Park. Damnak Sla Khmao (which is the original name) was built as a summer residence for King Sihanouk and was used between the 50s and 60s. Nowadays the palace is abandoned and the ruins are taken over by nature. The structure has fallen into decay and is covered with beautiful pieces of graffiti. The Palace itself is a perfect viewpoint to see the surrounding Bokor Hill and is home to hundreds of butterflies. When exploring the ruins keep an eye open for the surrounding jungle, you never know what kind of animal or insect might cross your path.
#2 Lok Yeay Mao Monument
On the other side of the road at Bokor Mountain, you see an enormous monument. The 29 meters high Lok Yeay Mao Monument is known as a goddess in Buddhist culture and locals still come here to pray. Legend says that Lok Yeay Mao was the protector of the mountains and coastal area of Cambodia.
#3 Wat Sampov Pram
The top of Bokor Hill Station reaches a height of 1048 metres above sea level and that is where you find Wat Sampov Pram. The Pagoda that was built by King Monivong is the highest Pagoda in Cambodia. On a clear day, you get rewarded with stunning views over the Gulf of Thailand and the Preah Monivong National Park. What’s even more spectacular is when the clouds touch the edge of Bokor mountain. These circumstances provide stunning scenes and you literally find yourself above the clouds.
#4 Bokor Hill Station
In 1921 the French Colonial rule built a village on top of Bokor Mountain to use as a summer getaway. With Bokor Mountain reaching a height of 1048 metres it was the perfect place to avoid the crowd and heat. Nowadays the Sokimex Investment Group owns the rights of the Cambodian government to rebuild Bokor Hill Station. But it won’t stop with rebuilding the place, the plan is to build hotels, golf clubs and restaurants. It’s a shame that this authentic place is being transformed into a place for luxury and leisure. Don’t hesitate to visit while it is still authentic.
#5 Le Bokor Palace
The well-known Le Bokor Palace hotel was first opened in 1925 by the French. The hotel that is positioned between the clouds of Bokor Hill in Cambodia was abandoned in 1946 during the Indochina war. After reopening it in 1962 it took only 10 years till it got abandoned again. This time Pol Pot’s Khmer Rouge forces took over the area and used it as a stronghold. The Khmer Rouge managed to hold the stronghold until the early 90s.
After several years of renovation, the Bokor Palace reopened its doors in 2018 to function as a 6-star hotel and casino.
#6 The Bokor Church
The old abandoned church at Bokor Hill Station is still in its original state as the French built it back in the day. The contrast of the with orange moss-covered church at the edge of Bokor Mountain with fog gives a stunning scenery. When you walk your way left of the church you’ll reach a viewpoint and those views will not disappoint. Walking among the church is one of the highlights at Bokor Hill Station.
#7 Admire the Popokovil Waterfall
The Popokvil waterfall is the only waterfall in the Kampot province and is located not too far from the Bokor Hill Station. Although you see great pictures of this small waterfall on the internet, don’t aim too high with your expectations. During the dry season, there isn’t that much to see and the best time to visit the Popokvil waterfall is during monsoons.
Near the waterfall, you can find a small restaurant that sells local food and drinks.
#8 Overlook the scenic Gulf of Thailand
At 1048 metres above sea level you have a great panoramic view over the Gulf of Thailand when the sky is clear. From all of the attractions in Preah Monivong National Park, you have a great overview but we prefer the viewpoint at the Bokor Church or the one on the right side at Wat Sampov Pram.

With the Bokor National Park located in the Kampot province, Kampot is the best place to settle yourself for a few days. Kampot is a lively city where life feels slow, making it one of my absolute favourite places in the whole of Cambodia.
Chances are that you stay a little longer than originally planned. Below you can find some of our favourite hotels in Kampot.
The weather | The best time to visit Bokor National Park
Because of the height that Bokor mountain reaches the temperature is lower than around the coast in Kampot. The mountain is also well known for being cloudy and when clouds pass by the temperature most likely drops. The year-round average temperature is around 25 degrees.
Monsoon
Cambodia has a tropical climate and the result of that is the monsoon that runs from June to October. You can still visit Cambodia during the monsoon as it only rains for around 2 hours a day. With the high chance of rain, it is wise to bring a rain jacket and some warm clothes.
How long should I stay in Bokor National Park?
The highlights of the Bokor National Park can all be seen in half a day but to truly appreciate each of them I recommend visiting the park a full day. If you’re thinking about hiking in Bokor Mountain it is wise to plan a few days. The easiest and most efficient way to explore the park is with a motorbike. It’s easy to park your motorbike once you reach one of the attractions and explore the area on foot.
Eventually, I did it in half a day with a guided tour, but if I could do it again, I would rent a motorbike instead and take some more time to experience the park.
How to get to Bokor National Park
If planning a trip to Bokor National Park came to mind, you’re probably thinking of staying in Kampot. Kampot is the best starting point when it comes to visiting Bokor Hill in Cambodia. Located only 35km from the city centre of Kampot it takes around 1 hour to reach Bokor Hill Station and this can be done in several ways.
How to get around Bokor National Park
By motorbike | The best way to explore the park is by renting a motorbike in Kampot. The roads from Kampot to Bokor Hill station are in good condition and you will come along some of the most spectacular viewpoints. If you enter the Bokor National Park by motorbike you have to pay an entrance fee of $0,50 at the bottom of the hill. We prefer this option as it gives you the most freedom while exploring one of the highlights in the Kampot province.

The Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou in North Africa is over 1000 years old but still just as relevant and a must-visit for anyone travelling to Morocco.

Where is Ait Ben Haddou
Ait Ben Haddou is located in the foothills of the Atlas Mountains in the South of Morocco, about 3.5 hours drive away from the hustle and bustle of Marrakech.
The fortified village itself is perched along the lush banks of the Ounila River in the charming province of Ouarzazate.
The time-worn Ksar lies on the former caravan route between Marrakech and the Sahara desert, and has become tremendously popular of late thanks to HBO’s blockbuster series Game of Thrones.

Game of Thrones filming location
Ait Ben Haddou was used as a filming location for Yunkai during season 3 of Game of Thrones. The city of Yunkai is a slave-trading city that was freed from their slave merchants by Daenerys Targaryen. Since Ait Ben Haddou has been a part of Game of Thrones it became even more popular.
This place is not only known for HBO’s blockbuster series: Game of Thrones as it is also used for the following movies: The Mummy, Gladiator, Alexander and Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time.
Best time to visit Ait Ben Haddou | The weather at Ait Ben Haddou
Low season
November to February | In the winter you won’t see many other people at Ait Ben Haddou, which is perfect if you want to have the place all for yourself. Don’t forget to bring layers as it can be surprisingly cold, especially in the evening.
Shoulder season
March to April and September to October | The temperature is best if you visit during spring and this is also when the country looks best. The landscape is in full bloom and is turning green as the temperature rises. During autumn you can expect the same weather.
High season
June to August | During summer the heat can be quite fierce and the days are long and sunny. Cover up in loose clothes to avoid sunburn and don’t forget to hydrate.
Best time of day to visit Ait Ben Haddou
Like always the best time to visit a UNESCO World Heritage is as early as possible or later in the afternoon. With Ait Ben Haddou it is the same situation as it is very popular among travellers in Morocco.
We always try to travel to a destination during shoulder season and so far we have experienced a lot of benefits for doing that.
How long to stay at Ait Ben Haddou
If you’re planning to visit Ait BenHaddou as part of a trip to the Sahara you will only have 3 hours to explore the area. Even though there is not much to do you can still easily enjoy yourself for a whole day and it is actually quite a good spot to watch the sunset.
How to get to Ait Ben Haddou
To reach Ait Benhaddou from Marrakech you have to pass the Atlas Mountains. This 4-hour drive will take you along Tizi n’ Tichka, and provide you with some of the most amazing views. The easiest way to visit Ait Ben Haddou is by booking a tour, but there are more options.
BY CAR | Renting a car and driving yourself is an excellent option but keep in mind that driving in Morocco is quite the adventure itself. The roads can lead to difficult situations and you have to be comfortable enough to conquer them. Most car rental companies in Morocco ask you to pay a security deposit of somewhere between €800 and €1200.
BY BUS | In Morocco, you have two major bus companies named: Supratours and CTM. From Marrakech, you can take the bus to Ouarzazate which is the city close to the kasbah. The bus ride will take about 4,5 hours and costs 95 dirhams. One thing that is really important is asking the bus driver to drop you at the intersection road that leads to Ait Ben Haddou. This is about 20km before reaching Ouarzazate.
From this point, it is 8km to Ait Ben Haddou and it cost you 15 dirhams to take a grand taxi. Many locals will offer you a ride if you pay them some money.
This is the most difficult option but the cheapest for travellers on a budget.
One downside about travelling by bus is that you don’t stop in both the High Atlas Mountains and the Tizi n’ Tichka pass. These sceneries are some of the highlights of Morocco and a delight for every travel photographer.
Join a guided tour
The easiest way is by going with a tour operator. Our visit was part of a tour we had with GetYourGuide. A nice thing about going on a tour is that you don’t have to worry about planning at all. We even stopped a few times to take some pictures in the Atlas Mountains.
The only downside about going with a tour is that you have to stick to a schedule and in this case that resulted in only 3 hours at Ait Ben Haddou.

A GUIDE TO ROTTERDAM, THE NETHERLANDS
1 | ARRIVE AT ROTTERDAM CENTRAL STATION
When you arrive at Rotterdam Central Station you immediately get a glimpse of the architecture Rotterdam has to offer. In 2014 the station had to go through a redesign because the old station didn’t have the capability to receive the average of 110.000 passengers it has daily.
The unique design makes it an interesting piece of architecture to visit. The combination of sharp edges and innovative materials combined with old elements make it a great asset for Rotterdam city. Photograph the shape in contrast with the sky and this building could make a stunning frame.
2 | WALK ALONG THE LUCHTSINGEL, YELLOW BRIDGE
Back in the days het Hofplein was the heart of Rotterdam, a few years ago nothing was left of that. So the city of Rotterdam raised money with crowdfunding to connect the city with a unique project called The Luchtsingel. With over 8.000 people that supported the initiative the 390 metre long yellow pedestrian bridge became a reality.
The bridge now functions to connect the central rail station with the forgotten parts of the city Rotterdam North and the Binnenrotte. In 2013 Luchtsingel won the Urban Intervention Award Berlin as an appreciation for this beautiful project that reconnects the city. If you walk along the bridge you will reach Luchtpark hofbogen where you can sit down and take a break.
3 | ADMIRE ROTTERDAM’S INCREDIBLE BRIDGES AND ARCHITECTURE
After the bombings of 1940, Rotterdam was rebuilt into a modern city that stands out in modern architecture. The city centre is compact so you get along excellent on foot. Walk over the Willemsbrug and have a look in the neighbourhood Kop van Zuid and walk back along the Erasmusbrug.
Or have a look at Post office POST Rotterdam that was built between 1915 and 1923. It is currently going through renovations as it will soon be functioning as apartments to match modern-day Rotterdam.
4 | HAVE LUNCH AT THE WITTE DE WITHSTRAAT
With all kinds of trendy cafés, restaurants and bars this truly is the place to be in Rotterdam. Witte de With is, without doubt, the place to simply relax while soaking up the atmosphere.
If you like Mexican cuisine you should have a taste at Supermercado, a cocktail bar-restaurant with Latin American kitchen that creates a street food vibe. Top it off with delicious ice cream at De IJssalon on the other side of the trendy street. They serve sorbets and dairy ice cream that will attack your taste buds.
Another place you might like is Nieuw Rotterdams Café which goes by the name NRC. This Metropole Café is one of the hotspots and transforms itself from café restaurant to bar every weekend. Enjoy funky, soul and r&b beats while drinking a cocktail.
Besides the booming restaurant scene, Witte is popular for her street art. As one of the places with the most graffiti in Rotterdam don’t mind wandering off to the side streets of Witte de Withstraat.
5 | ADMIRE THE CUBE HOUSES
The Kubuswoningen is a series of innovative Cube Houses designed by architect Piet Blom. Located between de Markthal and de Blaak you will find this piece of unique modern architecture. If you look at it from the outside you will question yourself if it is possible to live in one. If you want to have an impression of how the inside looks, visit the museum named ‘kijk-kubus’. The show cube is open every day from 11 am to 5 pm for an entrance fee of €3,-. Or book your stay here, to spend the night in one of the cubes and get the ultimate experience.
Try to plan your visit early in the morning, it is one of the most popular spots in Rotterdam.
6 | EAT YOUR HEART OUT AT MARKTHAL
The Markthal in Rotterdam is the biggest one in The Netherlands. With more than a hundred food stalls and a building that is just as spectacular, The Markthal is a must-visit in Rotterdam. Try local cuisines such as poffertjes, cheese and herring or have a go on famous national dishes.
Besides the fact that the Markthal is a foodie Walhalla, it’s also a gigantic piece of art. The inner walls are covered with 4.000 tiles decorated with colourful artwork named Horn of Plenty by Arno Coenen and Iris Roskamp. An interesting thing about the Markthal is that it also functions as apartments, 228 to be exact.
WHERE TO STAY IN ROTTERDAM
Ani & Haakien | Located close to the central station this hostel makes you feel at home while in Rotterdam. A modern-looking, clean and cosy place with a lovely backpackers vibe. The price is good and the Wifi even better.
CityHub Rotterdam | A high-tech private sleeping cabin that can be controlled by an app on your phone. All cabins have a king-size double bed and the shared bathroom has a rain shower and free toiletries. Perfectly located on the Witte de Withstraat close to the main tourist attractions of Rotterdam.
King Kong hostel | The most popular hostel in Rotterdam and the vibes are just amazing. The combination of the trendy and artistic interior makes this hostel a unique place to stay. The lively vibe that attracts you to the Witte de Withstraat translates itself perfectly into the King Kong Hostel.
StayOkay Rotterdam | If you are curious to experience how it feels to stay in a Cube House then this is your chance. The room is quite basic but the experience itself is just fun and exciting.
HOW TO GET AROUND ROTTERDAM
WALKING | Although the city centre of Rotterdam is really compact, it can be a little confusing finding your way. If you keep the Erasmusbrug as a start point it will be easier to navigate around the town. The best way to explore Rotterdam is by foot. All attractions in Rotterdam are within walking distance of each other.
BIKE | Another way to get along in Rotterdam is by bike. Donkey Republic is an easy service when it comes to renting a bike. But be careful, the traffic can be a bit chaotic in the Netherlands.
PUBLIC TRANSPORT | The easiest way to get around is with public transportation. The Rotterdam Welcome Card is a travel card that also provides a discount on a lot of tourist attractions in Rotterdam.
There are three options to choose from all of them coming with a city map and information about the discounts.

8 Wonderful things to do in Kampot, Cambodia's laidback riverside town
Kampot, an atmospheric city in South East Cambodia. For people that admire slow travel, this is one of the best places to visit in Cambodia.
Kampot city is easy to explore on foot and the surrounding attractions can be reached by motorbike or tuk-tuk. The laidback vibe in Kampot is one of the things that make you stay a little longer than planned. Combine this charming city with a day trip to Bokor National Park or a local pepper plantation and you are certain of a great time.

Where to stay in Kampot

If you want to stay near the city centre, Guest House Blue Buddha Hotel is a great pick. If you want to experience life a little bit slow down, Eden Eco Village is perfect for relaxing and is located on the riverside.

8 Wonderful things to do in Kampot, Cambodia
#1 Roam around Kampot City
Kampot is a small but charming city where you will find a lot of French colonial buildings being converted into guesthouses, bars or restaurants. Walking along the Kampot River and exploring the city centre gives you a good impression of authentic Cambodia. Another good option to explore Kampot is by bike. Because of the short distances, it is easy and fun to ride around town with a bike.
One thing we also noticed is the number of statues in the city and in particular the durian statue that has its own roundabout. Durian fruit is really popular in Kampot, so they honoured it with a statue.
#2 Explore the Bokor National Park
Bokor National Park is a famous park in Cambodia. The main attraction in Bokor National Park is the old French hill station at 1,080m above sea level. A visit to the park can be done easily as a day trip. You can book a day trip at one of the tourist offices or explore the 140.000 hectares by motorbike. With the roads being in good condition it makes it easy to drive by yourself. The entrance fee for the Bokor National Park is $0,50 and can be paid at the bottom of the hill.
Some of the highlights of the park in random order: The Ruins of The Black Palace, The Old Catholic church, Le Bokor Palace Hotel and Casino, Wat Sampov Pram, The Lok Yeay Mao Monument and the chance to spot wild tigers and elephants.
#3 Join a Kampot River cruise
A city divided by a river always charms us. In that case, a river cruise couldn’t miss. When you do the Bokor Hill trip, a sunset river cruise + drink is included. But it is also possible to only do a river cruise if you inform the tourist offices.
Some offices call it the Firefly cruise, but do you want our honest opinion? It’s a joke, there were literally no flies at all. Nevertheless, the cruise was quite relaxed and amusing.
#4 Go on a day trip to Kep
Nearby Kampot you will find a lazy coastal city named Kep. The city is famous for its seafood and in particular for its crab. Besides the beach, this city has no big attractions. Kep can be a great day trip but also if you want to relax for a few days while enjoying the Cambodian food. For us, it is slow travel at its finest!
#5 Take a stroll around the Kampot Markets
Similar to Battambang, there is a Night Market in Kampot. The market has been renovated and is open for business. With a lot of stalls that sell everything, it is nice wandering around. Find a souvenir, buy some clothes or enjoy the local food and drinks.
Besides the Kampot Night Market, you have the old market. It’s a traditional market that primarily provides the locals with the usual products. Have a look and wander around to see some local procedures but watch your head the ceilings are low.
#6 Visit La Plantation | Taste Kampot Pepper
When in Kampot, Cambodia you have to visit a pepper plantation. Located in between amazing hills close to the sea is the perfect environment to grow these peppers. The Kampot region is famous for its “Kampot pepper”. The pepper is the finest in the world and has been awarded the Protected Geographical Indication status. Compare this with the fact that a wine can only be named champagne if it’s from Champagne (France).
Kampot pepper stands out with its unique flavour, high quality and strong taste. Walking through the vines and learning about the peppers is fun and you will also get to taste all the different types. After a visit, your love for this spice will grow. #7 Sample traditional Cambodian food
When in Kampot, you can’t go around the smell of Kampot’s famous pepper. In every restaurant, you can eat this pepper, but we highly recommend Rikitikitavi for its traditional Khmer food. The restaurant is located on the riverside and also offers rooms.
Another Guesthouse and restaurant we really enjoyed is Pepe & the Viking. It is basically on the same street and is a place where you will feel very welcome.
We also recommend the hostel and restaurant GreenHouse; it is located across the river and on the right side of the main part of town.
#8 Visit the salt fields
Another fascinating thing to visit in Kampot are the salt fields. On your way to Kep, you will find a number of rice paddies that are currently being used as salt fields. The salt production is mostly done by hand and is from around the beginning of December to April. This is when it doesn’t rain too much.

How to get to Kampot
Sihanoukville to Kampot | Transportation in Cambodia is done best by bus. But if you travel from Sihanoukville to Kampot you will find out there is no bus line between those two cities. This means you have to travel by minivan or a private taxi. A minivan will cost you $6 and a private taxi will be between $30 and $35. The ride will take around 2,5 and 3 hours depending on how good the roads are and the amount of traffic.
Phnom Penh to Kampot | Going from Phnom Penh to Kampot offers more options. You can travel by bus, taxi and even by train. The bus will cost you anywhere around $10 and takes around 4 to 5 hours. A taxi from Phnom Penh to Kampot is one of the fastest ways to travel. It cost you between $30 and $50 and takes approximately 3,5 hours.
A nice alternative is to travel by train, the journey takes almost 5 hours but costs you only $6. The fun part about travelling by train is that you get to see a lot of the beautiful countryside Cambodia has to offer. If you pick this option, book your tickets direct at the train station.
